New Data Plans (limited)

If so, is that why they're pushing back the release date of the next batches of the X and the Incredible to Aug. 3?

As far as I know, they might do the teir'd data plans. I don't think that they would push back the distribution of the phone since the demand for it is pretty high. If you're on your unlimited plan, you should be able to be grandfathered in if you have the phone.

I was in the store yesterday getting my DROID X, and i asked the sales assoicate and they have heard nothing of it... and if you already have unlimited they are not going to take that away, you would be grandfathered in!

Most people said the new data plans like AT&T would come when Droid X hits the market. It already has. So far no announcements from Verizon directly.

I'm pretty sure the tiered plan is to allow people to purchase a plan lower than the $29.99 unlimited.  VZW runs on a CDMA network unlike AT&T's GSM network.  GSM  is more vulnerable to the network being overloaded due to having to many users in a coverage area.  The lawsuit that resulted from Iphone users not getting 3g coverage is one of the reasons AT&T killed their "unlimited" service.

yeah there is no official word and if they would then if you already have the unlimited they would allow you to keep it. There are some rumors around that they may keep the unlimited and add another tier or two for those who dont use as much data

I read this too on IGNs website. If they do implement a capped data limit, ill be forced to change my service. My droid uses its 3g connection constantly, and i like that. I also like being able to just do a google search anywhere at the drop of a hat. If i can no longer have truly unlimited data for 30 dollars a month or less, i have no reason to own a phone that requires a good connection. If i wanted a crappy service, id have gotten AT&T. Mark my words verizon, you will lose customers over it if you do not offer unlimited data.

If this information was verified as true, the individuals that are already on the unlimited plan will not most likely not experiance the change until they do a contract upgrade or change their plan, Verizon will most likely still honor the contracts that already exist. Which means that if you signed a contract with unlimited data package you will most likely keep it until the end of your contract.

I did read the story on another website. It looked like it would be tiered on the LTE network (at least that was my impression).

A lot of people look at this as a bad thing. It depends on how much data they might tier at each price point. Some people do not use that much data, so a tiered system would result in a cost savings. Some people still  would need an unlimited plan, but again, it depends on how much data they are looking at.

And Verizon does have a tiered system now. They have 250 megs at $9.99 and unlimited at $29.99. Of course the lower is for multimedia phones, not smartphones.

Also Verizon will not change the terms of your contract while you are still in the contract with no changes. They will not force you into tiered system unless you change phones, or initiate a change in plans. That also remains in place once your 1 or 2 year contract is up, if you make no changes, you will still continue month to month until you make a change.

and is no firm commitment to a tiered system yet. So we need to take a wait and see attitude to see what Verizon decides on, the price they decide on.
