I, too, have lost my Droid Market app. If I do a factory reset, will I loose all the apps I have previously downloaded (paid for)?

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

Once you log back in all you have to do is open market/press left menu key/select Downloads and this will show a list of apps that you have bought and a few free ones, sometimes free ones do not show but they can easly be downloaded but all pay ones will show up for sure.

Are there other ways to browse and install apps? Is Droid Market the only way to do this?

I was all set to follow your instructions, and BAM, i get a problem with the first one. I only have 2 items in my Privacy settings, "Use my location" and Factory Data Reset". There is nothing to uncheck for "Back up my data". So where does that leave me?

I am not sure what menu you are on because the Privacy menu has the menu as below: "Use My Location" should not be on this menu at all
The Settings/Location and Settings should have that menu for GPS.

two fairly idiot proof steps I thought.....Settings > Privacy..... and the options I listed above are the only two options in there. I mean I make some dumb mistakes sometimes, but I'd have a hard time fouling that up!

I am not clear if the menu looks like my post or only what you listed? If it doesnt look like the screen shots then I would say you have something else going on with your device.....
If the option isnt listed under Privacy then you can do the option when the device restart after hard reset.. The option just have to be disabled before logging in Google and Backup Assistant.
