You will need the 4g data plan for it, but you will still be able to use the phone in 3G areas.

Although we have not yet announced any 4G plans, I can explain that the Thunderbolt will be "backwards-compatible" to work on both 3G and 4G networks.

Thanks,

So, does this mean I could use a 3G data plan with the Thunderbolt?

My guess is that you'd still have to get the LTE data plan if you get the thunderbolt regardless of whether or not you're in an LTE market.  Roy was just saying that since it is dual mode (CDMA EVDO-Rev A and LTE) that you'd still be able to use the phone for calls and data even if you're not currently in an LTE area.

ok just trying to say a few things here..

1. not sure who to be upset with - the rumor mongers who are putting information out about the Thunderbolt - that we of course should take with a grain of salt - nothing official ... or

2. Verizon- for lack of any information - i was told would be emailed any updates to the phone or when it will be released - none of which has happened yet - but why nothing at all? would expect something like delayed or for instance something removed from the thunderbolt.. i.e. skype from what i have heard ( see #1) but my theory now which i should of had when i first heard that the thunderbolt is coming feb 14th 21st 28th etc.. is to just when its ready it will be released - i think verizon is not being very customer service oriented with elusive tactics.. the email promises and the " will call you when its in the store" promises are irratating to say the least.. verizon should put out that it will be ready when its ready - and at least send some kind of update out publicaly .. anyway my two cents .. also have to say that at a couple of verizon stores when questioned about the thunderbolt the reps get an attitude when asked ..

Just saw a print ad in the March 4th edition of Entertainment Weekly for the Thunderbolt.  It says available at Verizon and Best Buy.

Then got an email from UnWiredView......

http://www.unwiredview.com/2011/02/24/verizons-htc-thunderbolt-delayed-until-march-4-or-is-it/

So, could March 4th be the date?????

Interesting. I wonder how the network will be by 4 March.  Poor network engineers are working their butts off to meet a schedule that the marketing side can't control at this point. 😕

To be quite honest I was extremely amped about the release of this phone.  I have waited, and waited, and waited, and......well you get the point.  The fact that Verizon and HTC have yet to release the device or give any information whatsoever on details for the phone means there must be far bigger issues with the device than what they want the buying public to know.  Personally, I'm over it now.  I won't be getting the Thunderbolt and I'll wait to see what's next for 4G smartphones.  Hopefully something comes soon because I'm almost at the end of my contract and if Verizon can't offer an updated device I'll be taking myself to a different carrier.  The Thunderbolt release has been horribly handled by Verizon and doesn't give me much confidence in them.
