Are you playing videos from the stock gallery in the stock media player because this is the only player that supports the video out feature with hdmi? No 3rd party application will work. Also are you sure that the TV is set to the correct HDMI channel?

Same thing happened to me this week. Tried viewing pics and videos from the stock apps and my droid x just froze after it went into hdmi mode. Ive read that it has something to do with the froyo update, cant recall what it was exactly.
Glad I didn't buy an expensive cable lol.

Are you trying to view DRM protected videos or other videos downloaded to your phone? Because if this is the case it will not play over HDMI. The only videos that will play are user created videos.

Thats right, I forgot about the Copyrighted restrictions with HDMI cable... This can be a possibility for sure.

The DROID X HDMI port supports DRM free (unprotected).
Purchased DVDs and Blu-Rays are copyrighted and DRM protected and you cannot convert them (legally) for viewing on the DROID X Smartphone or using the HDMI Video Out, or wirelessly via DLNA.
Only unique self-captured video content with the following file formats and video codec can be played on the device, and over HDMI at a maximum resolution of 720p:
- MPEG4
- WMV
- H.263
- H.264
When playing media over the HDMI cable the DROIDX becomes a remote control allowing access to play, pause, fast-forward and rewind the media. The DROIDX HDMI out does not support gaming or presentation viewing.
