Gmail Contacts - not synching up properly?

The contacts I have in my Droid phone are not backing up / synching to the contacts in Gmail.

I have a contact on my old phone that listed just her 2 phone numbers. I had her email addy in Gmail contacts.

When I got my phone and synched up the contacts, her info did not save in Gmail. Now my Droid has her phones and email, but in Contacts in Gmail (on my desktop) it still just has her email address.

I also added a new contact in the Droid yesterday. It's not showing up in my Gmail Contacts now. I have manually synched several times.

I feel like the synch only goes one way? If I make changes in Gmail I think my phone is getting the info. But there is all kinds of contact data in my phone that isn't going to Gmail. Does this make sense?

My concern is that I don't have a back up of info if something happens to my phone. I'm told Gmail is supposed to be synching/saving all that. Any suggestions?

i don't know if you checked this, but in contacts of gmail, there is something called "My Contacts" and "All Contacts"....i don't know if you check both for the discrepancy? you may have to move the contact from one to the other.

all of my contacts updated, however, i can't seem to get my "groups" set up in gmail to sync with my phone.

Is the Droid capturing "My Contacts" or "All Contacts?"

it's getting my "all"....but the reason i asked the quesiton is that i noticed when i first set it up with my already existing gmail account, i had a lot of duplicates and last/first name & first/last name issues that i had to fix. wasn't sure if that was happening to you as well.

It can get thoroughly confusing with when you set up a Facebook account as well.

The duplications is something that I've seen and had to clear out myself.

My best suggestion is to go into Gmail itself, edit all contacts, restart your phone and you're good. THEN add the FB account to it.

I've been playing with this too and it's strange...

I added a dummy number... and then manually sync'ed. No updates in my Gmail contact.

I then added a dummy birthday... sync'ed.. then the dummy number appeared for my Gmail contact.

I think it does sync both ways, it's just not doing it in any normal way...haha.

I've been doing some similar things, adding dummy numbers to test it out. From what I can tell, if it's in your Gmail Contacts it will update to a contact in your Droid of the same name. I don't think it recognizes nicknames and I don't think it recognizes duplicate phone or emails, so you may still get dupe entries depending on how you had people named in your phone or in your contacts.

I cannot make Gmail Contacts get the info from the Droid, so it sucks in 2 ways: one, it's not working; and two, there's no backup for your phone. If you lose the phone or the data, you're screwed.

I just spent several hours making my Gmail contacts as accurate as possible.

I have an HTC Eris and my buddy has a Moto Droid.  My Eris will update changes I make online to gmail but if I make changes in the phone, they do not transfer back to gmail.  My buddy, however, added a new number in his Droid last night and when we logged into gmail online, it was there!  His phone contacts and gmail contacts were perfectly in sync.  What's going on?  Is this an Android version 1.5 vs 2.0 issue or is there something else going on?

I had major duplicates in my Gmail contacts and I spent a few hours also last night deleting them and getting the number down to 221.  But my phone didn't sync with it because the phone shows 247 contacts...

I don't know what to do to get it to manually sync...
