On the page, screen:
(triangle, an exclamation mark, and green droid character)
Pressed the search (far right), Four options appear:
(reboot system now
apply sd card:update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition.)
However, the bottom of the screen reads:
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/command
(There is no option for Format Device.)

If I hold home and power button, I get phone options (silent mode, airplane mode, power off).
I don't get an asterisk.
When I press search, I get the quick search box, not a blue menu.

You have to turn the phone OFF first then turn the phone back ON by pressing the Power and the Home button until you get the triangle with the asterisk.
Better yet search for Wildman's post "minimize froyo... " in this forum. I can't remember the whole title. It is a much cleaner way to factory reset your phone.
Good luck!

I get a triangle with an exclamation mark, with a green droid character next to it.
When I press start, I get four options,
(reboot system now, apply sd card:update.zip, wipe data/factory reset. and wipe cache partition.)
Almost in the bottom of the screen, it says E: Can't open /cache/recovery/command
And at the end of the screen, there is Ok and Hide.
There is no option for Format Device.

Seems like a LOT of work just to try to fix a Gallery issue. In most cases, if the Gallery fails to work properly, it is usually a corrupted picture in the Gallery directory. I've personally experienced this, as have others here. (Search forum for "Gallery won't open")
If you haven't done so, get GALLERY 3D - a free app. And see if THAT one launches. if it does, you can then scroll through and see if you come across a "blank" picture and remove it.
The other way to try to fix this is what worked for me - USB connect the phone and go into the picture directories (there are probably a few). And MOVE your pics to your computer ... thereby deleting them from the SD Card. Then see if Gallery opens. If it DOES, it was 1 of the pictures that was likely corrupted.
I would try this stuff before going through the painful RESET process ... Especially if other APPS are running fine that are on that card.
Good luck.
