Just got the Droid. Am wondering is the silent mode totally silent or do I have to power off to make sure there are no sounds?
Yeah, silent mode is very loud and has lots of vibrations that Vibrate Mode doesn't have.

Silent mode is completely silent. No worries.
Also, try downloading the app SilentModeOnOff. It's a great widget that you can add to any home screen and with one-click you can put it to silent, vibrate and normal. Very sweet stuff.
Hold on though. Test it with an alarm from the alarm clock app. I could have sworn that I had an alarm go off in my pocket during a meeting while my phone was on silent. I'm just saying to try it out and make sure. Set an alarm for a few minutes out and then put your phone on silent and confirm that it doesn't go off.
*edit* in fact, I'm trying it right now myself. I'll let you know.
*edit2* Yes, the alarm does sound even with the phone on silent.
