so I just got a new droid x but it won't let me change the notification tones....What do I do?

From your home screen hit menu button > settings > sound > notification ringtone > select the ringtone you want.

Unless you are tring to change the email or text notifications, thise have to be changed under the app...
Email:
Open Messages > Left Menu > Message Settings > Email > Notifications > Select Ringtone.
MMS and SMS:
Open Messages > Left Menu > Message Settings > Text Messaging > Notifications need to be checked and then > Select Ringtone.

Contact Custom Ringer Alert:
Phone > Contacts > Select Contacts Name > Left Menu Button > Edit > Scroll to Additional Info > Scroll future to Ringtone > Select Ringer > Save
Email:
Messaging > Messaging Settings > Email > Notifications > Select Ringtone
Text Messages:
Messaging > Messaging Settings > Text Messaging > Select Ringtone
Ringtones
Settings > Sounds > Phone Rintones
Default Generic Notification: (This is used if custom alert isnt accessable like when sd card is mounted)
Settings > Sounds > Notification Ringtones
