Droid X capabilities in non-Verizon areas?

My husband and I are looking for new phones - haven't upgraded in over 3 years and want a new smartphone.  We are pretty interested in the Droid X (which we now find impossible to get at a store).  Before ordering anything online, I was wondering what kind of service we will get at home since we are not in an 'official' Verizon wireless service area.  We currently have Alltell, which was bought by Verizon, but the Verizon website states we are not in the 'official' Verizon zone yet and automatically redirects us to Alltell phones (and the nearest Verizon store is 40 minutes away).  We can handle not getting the full 3g service at home, but we do want to be sure the phones work from home as we are not using a landline anymore.  We've been waiting for 8 years for Verizon to expand DSL for internet to our area (we live in the country), and don't want to be waiting forever for our phones to be useful at home.  Anyone in a similar situation using the Droid X out there who can comment on how the phone works when connected to Alltell (or other) service?

Worst case scenario you'd be roaming.  If you have Nationwide Roaming plan this isn't even an issue.

To give you an idea, I've used my VZW smart phone on Alltel towers in Michigan for the last 2 years and had no issues at all.
