Hello,
Sadly, I think that I might have a HW problem with my
new Droid X.
Often, the screen backlight stays on, seemingly
forever, when phone itself is off (in sleep mode) and
the screen is entirely black.
This seem to happen whenever I remove the unit from the
charger. I think that this has been exhausting my
battery.
To reproduce:
1. Place the Droid X on a charger (home or mobile). The
unit should wake up, and show the locked screen.
2. Put the Droid X into sleep mode by pushing the top
power/lock switch.
3. Now unplug the charger from the USB side connector.
4. In a dark room, you will see that with the phone
asleep, and the black screen, the backlight is still
on.
-----
As a work-around, to get the backlight to go off, you
can wake the phone up and put it back to sleep by
toggling the top power/lock switch. Now the backlight
will be off.
The work-around is simple enough, but I keep forgetting
to do it, and unless in a dark room, don't notice the
problem and my battery life suffers.
I'm running System version 2.3.15.MB810.Verizon.en.US,
Android version 2.2.
I tried the same test on a Droid 1, and it does not
have this problem.
Is this a HW or a SW problem? Will a new Droid X phone
fix this problem?
Does anybody else see this problem? Perhaps it is
caused by a certain combination of settings.

Did you do a hard reset after completing 2.2 update to remove any previous settings left over from 2.1? I've noticed a number of issue from old apps causing a number of unique issues on devices, usually a hard reset and app reinstalls usually resolved.

Sounds like you may
1. Have the option under Settings/Display Setting/Screen Timeout set to "NeverTimeout"
2. You have Settings/Application Settings/Development/Stay Awake may be checked.
3. If you have WidgetLocker check Menu/Settings/Screen Timeout and check Custom TimeOut and then Change Screen Timeout option.
Any of these can cause this issue, so I would check them all if they apply to your device.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
I've checked my settings and "Settings/Display Settings/Screen Timeout"
is set to 2 minutes, not "Never".
My "Settings/Application Settings/Development/Stay Awake" is not checked.
I do not have "WidgetLocker" installed.
Note that my problem is not that the screen is "on" when I don't want it on,
but instead that the screen is "off" (black) which is expected, but the backlight
is still on and doesn't go off until I toggle the power switch.

VerizonWireless Support recommended the same thing when
they responded, so I went ahead and did the Hard/Factory
Reset.
The good news is that the Hard/Factory Reset did fix the
backlight problem, which is great!

All you have to do to get your apps back is open the Market app and then click Menu/Downloads, you will see the apps thatyou have bough or downloades, simply click the apps you want to be restored and they will start being downloaded back on device.
Contact information should have installed when you inputted information for Google during setup process, if not open Backup Assistant and enter pasword and then hit Sync Now..

I have the same problem. None of the settings mentioned are set to keep the backlight on. I do not have widget locker and I have done the hard reset after 2.2 update.
The backlight still stays lit. No image on the display, just the backlight

Try Hard Resetting again but use this method located at http://community.vzw.com/t5/DROID-X-by-Motorola/Minimize-Droid-X-Issues-After-Froyo-Update/m-p/29658... sometimes settings are restored after reset and this restores the issue that you have before reset,..

I understand but the 2.2 update didnt seem to take in the issues that would happen from keeping the 2.1 settings. try checking your screen timeout settings at Settings > Display > Screen Timeout or Widget Locker > Left menu key > Settings <Screen Timeout. Also you may want to look into "My Backup" from market to backup personal data, apps and other settings.. I use it and it help. I can hard reset and be back up in 10 minutes...
