Droid X Is it worth it?

Is the Droid X really worth buying with all the problems it has?VPN, connecting to the net, being blacklisted. why even make the device if stuff like this is going to happen. I have internet through COMCAST and was hoping to switch to a device such as the Droid X to use as a hot spot to run my 2 personal pc's at home.  I live in Bloomington, IN. Some of the things i would like to be able to do while using my Droid X as a internet wifi spot are as follow.

1. edit websites.

2.download large files

3. and every day to day things you do with the net.

any helpful ideas would be greatly appreciated. one other thing would be the fact that i can get rid of the comcast bill of about 57 per month and would rather pay about 80 to 100 through verizon using my soon to be DRoid X as the center of my web connection services.

thank you for your time at looking at my post and responding. peace!!!

As with any product there are issues that pop up.  Sure there are devices that ship with issues and need to be exchanged or returned.  If the device meets your needs go for it.  You have a 30 day no questions asked, money back return policy.

Now, as for using the Droid X as a replacement for at home internet:  This isn't what the hotspot feature was intended for.  Sure for someone who's just using it to check their email a couplet times a day, it will work.  The problem is you have a data cap using the hotspot feature it's like 2-5gb, and it's typically meant for on-the-go light use.

Also the download speed will be a fraction of what you have with Comcast.  Right now with Comcast, you are probably between 12-20mbps download speed, download speed on the 3G network is between 1-2mbps dependent on signal strength.

So in short, if you are looking to get a Droid X as a home internet replacement, it's a bad idea.  If you need a new phone and the features of the Droid X match your needs, go for it.

No the Droid X is not worth it. The problems far out weigh the benefits, the same benefits you can get from any other smart phone without the problems.

I love my DROID X ...  it really has been mostly problem free in the 2 months that I've owned it. I have only had probably 2 hangs and 1 reboot to date.   I WILL tell you though that the times this happened, it was always when I was running GPS at the same time of a lot of texting & NAV ...   I don't do the hot spot "tethering" that you referred to in the OP ... which costs $20/mo. extra. But I don't think it would meet the criteria you're looking for to replace your COMCAST ...

You're going to hear from a lot of disgruntled owners here; each with their own cross to bear ... just the nature of user forums. I thinks this is a great phone though - my previous LG DARE had it's own issues from time to time; so honestly there is no 100% perfect phone out there, IMHO ...  Best of luck in your decision.

In my opinion the Droid X is still worth having, even with the issues that has came from the 2.2 updates it still is a superior device over others I still think that the issues are not 2.2 completely but more long the incompatible software with 2.2 because if you read over all the forums of 2.2 devices they usually notice issues with a number of apps installs.  This is common known issue with OS you have and then update to new builds.

I haven't seen anything released recently would make medrop my X just yet, but there is some up coming devices that may tickle my fancy..

I'm very happy with my Droid X.  Todays smartphones do lots of things and I think, very well, but because they do so many things, this leaves more things where problems can arrise.   To somewhat illustrate what I'm saying, thinks about the automobiles produced back in the 40's and 50's.  They didn't have many ammenities, my dad has told me that on many models even a heater was an option. Not to many things to go wrong.  Engine, transmission, brakes, steering, etc.  Now look at the cars produced in the 70's and 80's.   Now many cars have power window, seats, and door locks.  Also Air conditioning, speed control, electic rear view mirrors, sun roofs, auto trunk openers, intermittant wipers, and the list goes on.  My point being that with those cars there were many more opportunities for something to have a problem.

Now smartphones are relatively new in the cel phone business. but to be sure there are many millions of smartphones out there that aren't having any problems.  This forum is where people come to describe thier problem and find help, so many of the posts are going to be about phone problems, maybe even the majority in fact. But still, the fact remains, there are multi millions of phones out there with no problems.

Also, as time passes, cel phone technology will improve, just as it did in the automobile bussiness I referred to earlier. It will only get better!

So, to answer the original question, yes I think the Droid X is worth it.

well i  have decided to go with the droid x. one thing concerns me is the fact that vpn, which i have no idea what that is, is having problems with some or does that depend on where you live. i dont want to spend the money and not be able to use it. want to use it for the following reasons.

1. pictures (high 8meg pixel)

2. quality hd video capture

3. email

4. tv

5. skype (if available)

6. twitter, facebook

7. IM's from various providers

one other thing, like the htc evo 4g does the droid x allow you to speak into the phone and type up your txt's like the htc evo 4g does?

If the DX doesn't live up to your expectations, then exercise your option to return it within 30 for a refund.

And yes, the DX does have voice to text.

I've had the DroidX now for 4 months there are things I like and don't like when everyone else are using their phones inside pretty much everywhere I can not.Not sure its phone or Verizon and all those places are in high coverage area as far as the maps show.So I will probably be going back to AT&T in 16 months(Even tho cannot stand but always had great service)

You wrote "well i  have decided to go with the droid x. one thing concerns me is the fact that vpn, which i have no idea what that is, is having problems with some..."

VPN is Virtual Private Network http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VPN .  If your employer requires the use of a VPN to communicate securely with their servers, you have to be aware of whatever issues a few people may have reported.  If you will never have need to use a Virtual Private Network it is a moot point.

You'll love your Droid X.
