Droid X - Contacts

I recently purchased a Droid X and transferred in my contacts.  They all show up alphabetically by first name.  I'd like to change that globally to alphabetically by last name.  How can I do that?

With the stock dialer this isnt possible, you can not sort the contacts list.

I'm not sure what you mean by a "stock dialer."  I don't want to sort the contacts; I just want to have them listed alphabetically by last name instead of first name.  Is there no way to change the contacts to list by last name short of reentering all the data on the new Droid X?  Thx.

The contacts are listed under the Phone Dialer and this is the stock dialer, also if you want to list the contacts by last name you want to sort the order by last name......   And as posted this can not be done, this has been asked a number of times and it has been determined that this isn't possible.

Hey, Wildman, how's things?

I see this topic popping up and I got curious while I'm doing my usual surfing before the day cranks up...I looked at my Google Contact Manager and there's a tab that says "More Actions", in that drop-down menu at the bottom, there's an option to sort the contacts by either first name or by last name. Would that selection either way affect the sorting order of the contacts in the phone? I know that the phone updates its contacts when I make changes the contacts online?

(EDIT). I forgot to mention that I'm ASSuming that the user would have their contacts set to sync with Google Contacts. After trying several other options, I can't see why anyone wouldn't want to. Just the back-up aspect of that is worth using it. No Back-Up Manager for me!

I'd try it this morning, but with the day I have coming up, I don't need any un-necessary curve balls tossed at me...:smileyvery-happy:

Wildman, you could sort contacts by last name in 2.1, so CLEARLY it is possible.  Why would they ever remove important functionality like this when doing a software upgrade.

So, Verizon, how about a committment to fix this (restore what you took away) in a future upgrade?

Gerio, I have my Google contacts listed last name first on line and my contacts on the X are still listed first name>last name.

One solution is the Better Contact app. It claims it will sort by last name. It costs $2.63 though.

Hey Gerio, been doing good, thanks for asking....   I understand your post that the Google online application allows for the user to sort the contacts but the device does not reflect this change and a number of users have attempted to get the phones list to reflect the websites list with no luck.

@ Others

I do also understand that that some reported that on 2.1 that the contacts was able to be sorted Lastname, Firstname but I do not recall this being the situation with my device, all my contacts names have been in alphabetical order and since that is how I prefer it I never tried to change it when I had 2.1, but on the same notes I have learned that at times when you are forced to resolve a known bug in a software things sometimes has to be modified to accommodate the fix and I am thinking this may be the situation here.

Also keep in mind that if any changes was made it was most likely done by Motorola and just because a handful of user preferred a feature one way doesn’t mean that options wont get changed to resolve a issue, I preferred the option to disable the slide lock option that was removed without asking, am I going to complain, no because it wont go anywhere under a situation like this.  This was such a miner thing to make a big issue out of and eventho sorting contacts is a nice feature for some it may not be a big deal for others, if a company rewrote their software every time an individual wanted a feature they wouldn’t ever release an update or app.

I don’t mean any disrespect, but sometimes it not that serious...  There are a number of apps that has been discussed to work around this, this is just as major as the text messages being out of order, a bit of a pain but doesn’t make device unusable.

How's it going Geri O & Wildman,

Wildman u're correct, there was absolutely no way to do that w/ native (2.1), believe me I tried & spent a bunch of time on phone w/ cstmr. ser. & diff forums searching. Don't know if yall rembr, but prior to (2.2) I had figured out away (& had posted it) to use the google stand alone contact list to do this by putting last/first / first/last on the line for name, as it was only (1) line & it would transfer. to X that way. It would still recognize the name by first name if using voice dial. However, after (2.2) it will no longer work. The only way I have found to do this is to put the names of contacts on the X itself in reverse. The only issue when u do it this way is, when using voice dial u have to say the contact u want dial last/first / first/last to get it to recognize who u want it to dial.

Hey, PCW, what's new?

Yeah, guys, I tried changing the online Google contacts to last name first, but that change did NOT make the trip to the phone. Weird, but no biggie, I suppose...

In my work, I get a LOT,  I mean a WHOLE LOT of first-name only contacts and numbers that I need to keep a number on. For instance, :the first-name field will be "Brent" and the last name will be "Eric Church" so I'll have a reference to why I have the name. So the first-name sorting is definitely better for me.

If I had to have last-name-sorting, I'd be happy to spend the couple of dollars for the ability to do so. I suppose it might offend some's sensibilities to have to pay for a feature that, I'll agree, should come with the phone. But ya, know, as Wildman alluded to, life is short and part of the measure of success in our lives is how we choose our battles in life (that's why I laugh at the people raising hell about the apps that can't be deleted for the phone...:smileyvery-happy:, see, I'm laughing again...:smileyvery-happy:). It doesn't wreck my day nearly as much as my FREAKING CO-WORKERS WITH iPHONES THAT I CAN HARDLY GET IN TOUCH WITH!!!!!!!!!!!!!.....

Now THAT'S a battle I can engage,,,:smileyvery-happy:

See ya'll....
