Yes, they both use the Micro USB plug.

<Not intended as a thread hijack>

I don't know what the original poster had in mind, but I have the same question.  More specifically, the X arrives with an AC transformer which sports a USB port, and a "standard" USB-to-micro USB cable.  If my 43yo eyes aren't deceiving me, the transformer output is 850 mA.  The spec for a normal computer USB port is only 500 mA.

I do not see an output rating for the microUSB car chargers, so I'm wondering if they are up to the 850 mA that the provided charger supplies.  I noted that my cheap charger was losing the battle when I used it in the windshield mount and was pushing the device pretty hard.  I had less charge when I unplugged it than I started out with!

The current capacity on car chargers isn't listed because in most cases, there is plenty of current capacity available due to the high current available from the car's battery and alternator (actually, that's a lousy explanation, but it covers the gist of the question and I'm not very familiar with auto 12V systems. Gimme 120V, 240V, 208V AC any day!).

 If you are having problems with the car charger, it may be time for a replacement (it's amazing to me how long even the good ones DON'T last) or, as you mentioned, it's an el-cheapo charger that may not have been up to the task to start with. While it's not totally necessary to use the Verizon-branded car charger (at $30.00, no less), I wouldn't buy one off of the rack at the local convenience store. But one from Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Office Depot or Radio Shack (anyone remember when you could actually buy parts to fix electronic stuff with at Radio Shack??) should be fine for car charging duties.

But you are correct, there is not enough current capacity from the computer's USB port to sufficiently charge the X. It might tickle it a bit, but it would take bloody forever to fully charge the X, if it could at all. The home charger with the detachable USB cable that comes with the X, as well as other phones is more of a convenience thing, since you can use the charger's cable to connect to the computer for data chores. And if the cable ever goes bad, you simply buy a USB-to-Micro-USB cable as a replacement and you're set to go again.

dmccr, any(1) else w/ same issue, & of course (LoYo1979) since we did pretty much hi-jack ur post (I apologize)

(though, maybe, it does have a little bit of relevance to ur question)

Here's something else to maybe think about. Rmbr. the X essentially is a mini computer, & as a reg. computers do, it heats up as you use it. However, unlike a reg. computer it doesn't have any kind of internal cooling (fans), & there for it may over heat & stop chrg., the more u push it. And then add the heat coming thru the windshd too. Mine did the same thing when using it for mult. tasks in the dock, w/ it on the windshd & drove me nuts when I (1st) got it. I even took the dock back to vz & exchg. it, thinking it was the problem. However, that didn't make a diff. I end-up installing a suggested batt. app that shows temp. after reading several posts on the moto forum about the same thing & did some experimenting, as also suggested. I had app set to celsius & found out that once the batt. hit around (51 c) it would stop chrg. As soon as I would hold X in frnt. of a/c vent & temp. dropped to around (49 c) it would start chrg. again. That is exactly what some of those post, also suggested, mount dock so u can dir. a/c vent on it. Since doing that, I haven't once had X over heat & stop chrg in dock, w/ mult tasks going on @ same time (nav, on call thru blth, speedview). As a matter of fact it completely chrg to (100%), & that is w/ a(3) y/o I-Go universal car chrg. (sorry, haven't a clue on mA, couldn't find it on it or on-line.

hope this helps

I had the heat issue with a Samsung Omnia II (among sooo many others, LOL) in a car dock. However, I'm not having with the Droid X and I think it is because I use a case available from Verizon that can stay on the phone when its on the car dock. This case is actually 2 parts - the phone cover and a belt holster that the covered phone fits in nicely. I've always thought that this cover keeps the heat of of the phone.
Which battery app shows the temperature? I would love to see if my theory is correct.

Thanx, Geri O

Geri O,

It's called "Battery Status", from the market. Used to be able to have both ferh. & cels. show @ same time when I 1st loaded, however, devlpr. chngd that. Metric was always to hard for me to figure out, after being schooled on good ole U.S. math, however, it's easier to read in cels., just to get a # to compare for this, though u can still use ferh. if u want. I also have "Battery Left", & it also has temp. & a couple of other diff. functions too.
