Data Plan with Droid Question.

Hey everyone!

Do you really need to get the $30 data package with the droid?!?!?

Is there no other less expensive data package that I could sign up for? I know it is a phone that you should get the data package with, but I just dont use it that much. I also know that the droid comes with wi-fi, which I could use when I am at school any way, since my whole school was wi-fi every where! So pretty much I was asking if there was a watered-down data package plan.

Thanks a lot!

Ryan

Unfortunately Ryan I think the $30 a month data is mandatory and the cheapest data plan available for the Droid.

If you don't think you're going to use much data then perhaps the droid isn't right for you. But if you're going to be using apps, IMing, and emailing, you're going to be using data. So do you mean you won't be surfing the web that much?

Yeah pretty much ill be using the apps, possibly email only. . I just do not see why using the internet is $30 extra a month!!, I could do $10 or $15, but $30 is just to much for myself being in college. If I could, I would love to just use the phone without the internet and just use the WI-FI, but apperently what I have been reading, that will not work :smileymad:

If they did offer $10 or a $15 data plan I think it would be very limiting. For $30 a month you get unlimited data. That's really not too bad.

Maybe you should check out some of the other devices and perhaps you can get a smaller plan for your email use. No offense, but the Droid sounds like overkill for your needs.

I was looking to still go threw verizon. My dad gets free cell phone use threw his company, so I can't switch providers. Just wanted to get a cheap data package.

If you just want a touchscreen phone, just get the new chocolate touch. its free, and the data plan is like 15 bucks i think... but it wont be nearly as fast as the droid.. and it doesnt have wifi. but it seems like your just want a cool lookin phone with a touchscreen.

I'd like to see your response to your first month's bill if you didnt have unlimited data for $30 and were charged per mb usage on the droid phone.  these smartphones require the unlimited data package because they are constantly utilizing the data connection even while just sitting there.  $30 is actually a very good deal, but it sounds to me like you do not need a smartphone as they all require the $30 data feature.

As a user of a PocketPC for a number of years all that was ever missing from it was a phone. I have watched Video, done Powerpoint presentations (yes from my pocketpc connected to a projector), worked in Excel and synced all of my outlook items for years now.  When I wanted internet, I found free wifi and connected.

All I want is to have it have a built in mobile phone in the device, I do not need 24/7 anywhere internet at 30 bucks a month.

I need and want many of the games, apps, etc that a smart phone has I just do not need or want 24/7 anywhere internet, is that so hard to understand?

I would get the droid in a second at $300 if I could get it without a data plan. It appears to let me run off of wifi when that is available, now I just need to understand how to get it to not connect to the data plan on its own (i.e. without my consent)
