When I touch the red CONTACTS icon at the bottom of the display my contacts list NO longer comes up. Instead a message comes up that says:
Press menu and touch
Get Friends to import contacts from your accounts
or press
Accounts to add or configure an account
BUT on the other hand
When I touch the green MESSAGING icon at the bottom of the display and then touch contacts my full contacts list comes up. It is because of this that I know that my contacts list is still in the phone.
Any ideas as to what to do.

This one really had me worried because the only answer I got when I was at a 2nd level at VZ tech support is that it's a software problem and the only thing you can do is a full factory reset. But I must give the guy credit he explained to me the draconian thing this does to your phone. In simple terms you lose everything and you're starting over. I thanked him nicely and said I wanted to try to fix it myself.
After trying and trying it finally dawned on me that all my contacts had the google g that was to their right removed and so after 1348 tries later I discovered how to get the google g in its proper place. The bad news is that I cannot again get to the screen that allowed me to classify all my contacts as google accounts. I did notice that it would have been possible to classify them as Verizon for backup purposes. Now I know, all contacts must be classified for the CONTACT list software to work!!!
I have to think about it some more and if I can remember how I got to the place where I could classify my contacts I will add it to this thread. If anyone else knows please add it here. You'll be helping other folks!
Thank goodness that I did not have to do a full factory reset! I'm going to go get a beer...see ya tomorrow.

Saturday morning - October 15th
After thinking about this some more here are the steps I took to fix the problem where the contacts no longer would come up after pressing the red colored CONTACTS button at the bottom of the display. So when, in place of the contacts list, the following message came up, I pressed menu and touched Accounts to add or configure an account.
Then at the bottom of the next screen that appeared I touched Google and this reattached the Google g to the right side of each account. Problem fixed without a full factory reset.
I assume that every contact in your contact list must be assigned to something maybe such as a backup system because I remember weeks before all my contacts had a red colored symbol to the right which signified Verizon. That was when I was "trying" to use the Verizon Backup Assistant. For some reason I could not get it to work so I switched to the Google backup system and the Google g appeared to the right of each contact.
Anyhow, my big relief is that I fixed it without a full factory reset.

PS, Note to Verizon, please show this thread to the 2nd level tech support folks. You might save some of your customers some grief.
