DL1234: "...phones with new modems."? What do you mean by this? How does the Droid Charge have a modem? Do you mean users who tether their Charge to a PC as a modem? Thanks.

Sorry Guess I should of clarified.. when I say modems, I mean the firmware.

The new 2.3.6 release has new modem firmware.  It might help alleviate some issues.  Verizon started pushing the update 2 or 3 days ago in a rollout cycle.

And as to how does it have a modem?  How do you think your phone gets a data connection?  It is not the typical PC modem that you think of back in the day of the beeps boops bah.. but it is still a modem.

Direct Broadcast Satellite, WIFI, and Mobile Phones all use modems to communicate, as do most other wireless services today.

I just uninstalled the battery application on my phone.  I pray that helps!  Thanks for the pointers. :smileyindifferent:

I have never had a "battery application" installed on my Charge. While it is certainly possible battery apps might cause issues with your phone, they have nothing to do with this "Network not available" problem most charge users are experiencing.

Hopefully this Gingerbread update fixes it, or this phone is getting returned for something else.

I am updated with the GB OTA and this problem, which I never had before, I now have.   There is no "battery saver" application installed- in fact it's barely has anything installed- I can't do it- it keeps losing connection to the data service and I can't install anything

I am not going to call because all I will be told is to do a factory reset and/or they will trade phones.  Thanks, I don't need a refurb to replace my new phone that clearly has a problem with the radios- not hardware.

My Charge just updated the system a couple of days ago. Now I have Firmware Version 2.3.6.  The data connection has not changed because they are apparently still working on the towers changing cables from 3G to 4G.

The only changes I see are that when I touch the screen I get a bright yellow boarder at the top of side of the screen to show that the screen is active I guess. There are some more minor changes, but nothing really significant.

I am hoping beyond all hope that this software is in preparation for the upcoming 4G which I am told we will have in my area by February.

Time will tell.

Phone calls are still not very clear all the time, but better than they were when I first got the phone and could barely hear anyone and no one could hear me.

Here's hoping things get better when the 4G cables are all finally installed.

Outside of these two issues, I've finally decided that I really like this phone...

The upgrade has nothing to do with that- and I can tell you this problem happens in 4G areas as well as 3g.  In a 4g area you get 4G for a moment- then it falls back to 3G then it goes away completely.

ARGHHHH!!!  Thanks for the warning "JustOneMoreDroid."   I had great hopes....

Sometimes I get the feeling we are moving backwards instead of forward in the technological world.

I remember back in the mid 90's when all we had was Compuserve, AOL, and Prodigy and no one I knew could afford them because you had to pay by the minute to use the services, AFTER paying membership fees.

It was a huge boon when independent ISPs started up and offered unlimited usage for flat monthly fees.

Now we have gone back to limited, fee-based quotas and access again. Anything that makes money seems to be the "name of the game." Always the bottom line of profit... and the heck with the satisfaction of the customer.

If all of the carriers provide the same options, there are no incentives for companies to keep their customers happy. We couldn't go anywhere else to get a better deal.

Good Customer Service is still the best business model. Building customer loyalty is still the most profitiable way to do business as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks for the feedback..

Judi,

Are you in the northeast? There is an outage here.... a widespread one... that's probably not just the northeast.

JstOneMoreDroid,

I'm in Southeastern Florida on the coast right above West Palm Beach and I know they are converting the 3G cables over to 4G and are expected to have it completed by February, so I see the connection going off and on all day long and more at night and on the weekends than during the day. It's maddening!!
