I wanted to update you on my issue. I disabled the power saving setting under display settings and this has improved the data issues for me and my wifes phone.
After some careful observation it has come to my attention that much of my issue lies with US cellular who is providing my service in the area. Their towers are dropping my data. I am able to go from no data to native VZW and connect to data with no issues.

So here is just one quote from that Bionic thread:
"There is a (now) known problem with the bionic that some people are experiencing no data or no 3g or no 4g data issues with their phone. For now, the work around they are telling people is to turn their phone into airplane mode, then back to normal mode and it will work. Software update to fix the issue is expected in November."
Maybe they mean November of 2012? Kind of gets you discouraged to see the similar issue starting all over with a brand new phone.

Im starting to wonder if this isnt a global issue with verizons equipent. Hard to believe that different manufactuers are having the same problem unless they are using the wrong data from verizon..
Just a thought, I always hated AT&T because of crappy connectio.s so I hope verizon does continue on this path.
How many of you cant see what your tiyping because the widow.is at the.top of the screen in landscape mode?
Thanks

dsquare86,
Thanks for telling me your results. Glad that disabling Power Saving helped a little bit. Now test it with your 110 volt charger connected to the phone to see if that helps a little bit more.
After that you can pound a large nail through the screen!!! JUST KIDDING

Same issue down here. I'm within a mile of a Verizon tower, and it's the ONLY tower in the area. No 4G available here, either.
The local Verizon store says it's a problem with the Verizon tower. Sigh.
I think it is something inherently wrong with their network.
And just as SOON as I can, I'm switching providers. Been a Verizon customer for years, and they act like I'm the only person in the world having issues. Customer service has gone out the window.

Forgot to mention that Verizon also said they couldn't get a technician down here to FIX their tower, either.
Lovely, isn't it.

not to sound like an 'alarmist' but i've owned the thunderbolt, charge and the bionic .... all three phones would lose data connection, bionic not as often as the other two, but would lose it, just the same ... i had the problem with the thunderbolt and the charge before 4g was even in my area .... had replacement phones for ALL THREE ... made no difference.
the odd thing is, that it wasn't an issue with poor signal AND my 3g only phones, iphone and trophy, NEVER lost their data connection ... i went through tech support, etc blah blah blah ... finally one of them said/admitted that after all that it MUST be a problem with the network ... can't figure another reason why ALL THREE 4g phones would lose data connection, even when set to 3g only, but the 3g phones didn't .. it's a head scratcher for sure.
i bought two of the 4g phones outright so i'm pretty unhappy that they don't work with any regularity .. i ended up going back to the iphone sooo many times.
i only wish they could figure it out so i could have my 4g and 'eat it' too

My Charge loses its data connection all the time too. It is mainly related to wifi. If I leave wifi off all the time, it rarely, if ever, happens. With wifi on, if when I leave wifi coverage the phone does not switch to using data through the network. I get the Network is Unavailable message. Only restarting the phone fixes it.

My Charge works awesome in 4G markets. However in my current location for the last few months I only have 3g signal, data is so poor that the phone drops data before the market can install updates.
Calls and text is about all I can do with it. Other VZW phones here work fine. So yeah, this phone has some issues.
