When clicking on the icon for the camera the only thing that appears is a black screen with a square in the middle of the black screen. Even when taking a picture the picture comes out black. This was working before and not now. So I can not take any pictures. Thoughts please?

What OS version are you using? What happens when you tap the screen in camera mode? Do you have the option to turn on the flash? Does that work?

Sounds like you have your finger over the lens or have a new case that is covering the lens. That Possible?

No on the finger or new case. I wish it was that easy. Thanks

Try these troubleshooting steps to resolve your issue.

  • Self portrait mode puts the DROID X camera in an automatic capture mode based on face-detection. If you aim the camera at an area that does not have any faces, the camera may not take a photo. In Self Portrait picture mode, the capture is automatic, so pressing the capture button will not work. Change camera's Picture mode to Single Shot (From camera view finder screen: press Menu > Picture Modes > Single Shot or Panorama/Multi-shot) to get out of self portrait mode and back to a normal camera style so you can use the camera/capture button to take a photo.

  • Camera will revert to last picture mode taken when camera is started. If you start your camera and get beeps when trying to take a photo, it is probably in Self portrait mode and needs to be returned back to Single shot mode. Change camera's Picture mode to Single Shot (From camera view finder screen: press Menu > Picture Modes > Single Shot.

  • If nothing works and viewfinder is black, check camera lens & shutter. It should be open so you can see the camera lens. When you take a photo, the shutter blinks closed and then back open. If the shutter is mechanically closed, handset may need to be repaired or replaced.
