This has been a consistent issue with my Droid 2. I'm on my third replacement now! The camera will work, but after a while it stops opening. I've noticed that right before this issue happens, I take a pic and instead of the actual image showing in the gallery, it shows a gray square. Also whenever my camera stops working, I cannot play any media files, not even Youtube. I have taken the sd card in and out, I have reset the phone, but the issue keeps happening. I'm sick and tired of it and to make things worse, Verizon send a REFURBISHED phone as a replacement, instead of a brand new one (I bought a new one, so I would expect to get a new one as a replacement). Has anyone else experienced this? Other than taking my phone back yet again, has anyone found a permanent solution? I don't want to keep resetting (taking battery out) every time, and I don't want to deal with the unhelpful morons at the Verizon store anymore!

Make sure you have the most updated software on the device.
From the main screen, touch menu tab
Touch Settings
Touch About Phone
Touch System Updates
Ensure that you are using the pre-installed camera application and gallery that came with the device.
If you have applications that access the gallery on the device, try un-installing or removing those applications.

Same problem here. I have another phone on the way to replace it (but for other reasons...randomly powering off).
My question is this...how do you know if the phone they sent you is refurbished? I will be irate if they send me a refurbished one!
Thanks,
Susan

I know it's a pain, but keep sending them in until you get one that works correctly. Eventually you will.

The camera on my Droid 2 has recently stopped working as well. I'm having the same issue where the screen goes black for a few seconds then returns to the home screen. So the fix is to return the phone for a new one? I've tried the steps Noah mentioned. I've stripped the phone down to what came with the base install with no luck. I'm thinking the camera app itself has become corrupted.

If you haven't already the only other step is to try restoring factory defaults and see if that works before calling for a replacement. It'll be good practice for setting up the new phone when it arrives. 😕
