I really need arrow up/down and sidways buttons.  Does anyone know if they are coming out with them? 

 

Trying to touch in the right spot onscreen is impossible to edit text or anything else.

I agree but have you tried pressing on word until magnify glass shows and then place pointer in the right place with the magnify glass? I seems to work better for some users.

I know that it isn't the stock keyboard, but SwiftKey (available on the Market) has arrow keys built into the keyboard to allow you to move around the text box. You can give the trial version a spin and see if it works for you before buying the full version of SwiftKey.
