Hopefully someone from Verizon can answer this? There are a lot of posts on other forums about the 2.2.1 bug fix upgrade and rooted users installing it. The rumors say that it speeds up the phone and resolves Wifi, music and TXT issues. When can we expect to get it and will it be an OTA?

I am not with Verizon but from what I have read 2.2.1 still isn't ready for release because users have been having other issues deriving from installing that rom, Motorola or Verizon hasn't acknowledge the update even exist so that usually means that they are not ready to even bring it to light so I wouldn't expect a response just yet. They reported a update is in the works but no more information has been given..
Also if they release this update it will always be a OTA update.. I haven't seen them use any other method because OTA is the easiest and safest.

The 2.2.1 version you hear about with rooted users is a custom mod. It is in no way official.

It's been announced for the original droid (A855). http://support.vzw.com/pdf/system_update/moto_droid.pdf
It's currently being tested by a small group of Motorola Feedback Network members per the email excerpt below that you can find on various droid sites on the web.
Over the next 24 hours, barring last-minute changes, we will begin to distribute the latest Droid software to a select group of owners, and you should expect to be among them.* As a Motorola Feedback Network member, you are key to this test. Some of the owners are chosen at random and as a result, we won’t get feedback from them. But we’re counting on you and other members to provide us with a quick and accurate assessment of this update. After this pre-launch release, we’ll observe for a few days to make sure all is well, before releasing to all owners.

Great news.
The release is imminent. Check out the posts at the Motorola Forum. Verizon is readying the release for us and it should be very soon.
