I need some help here given the fact that I just spent over an hour on the phone with Verizon being bounced across four different reps/depts only to be hung up on during the transfer to the fifth.
Device: Mifi 4510L
Connected Device: Apple MacBook Air
No background tasks running (Dropbox sync, iCloud, etc.)
Only connected device during the 24 hour period.
At 9:58am I get an email stating that the previous balance of data was at 99% of it's usage (this just after a 50% and 75% warning just several minutes earlier). Just after 10am I renew my plan with a 10GB option.
By 10am the following day I get another email warning about 50% of my usage being used up. The internet connection terminates a few minutes later.
I've been using ONLY email and a few web pages. Steered clear of ALL streaming sites (no video or audio to speak of). Checked to ensure that no background tasks were downloading/synch'ing anything. 10GB in 24hrs??? This is the type of stuff reserved for hooking an XBox Live account up to one of these things.
Aside from returning the device to Best Buy and never using this service again, where do I turn? Verizon's been of little help and up until I was disconnected, they simply said 'something on your end must be doing it and due to privacy restrictions we can't see what it is."
I've spent $160 this week to check email for three days. I'm at an obvious disadvantage and definitely feel completely taken advantage of.
Doubtful unless the macbook decided to download every update released for it. Something definitely sounds fishy.
Somebody else got your password for the MiFi and piggybacking on your signal?

That's my guess, especially if the OP left the MiFi's password at the manufacturer default which is quickly learned by the masses. Also, there is a option in the Settings page that allows you to restrict the number of connections allowed from the default 10 all the way down to ONE. Technically it's called MAC address filtering, can be hacked and bypassed, but still better than 10 available connections using a default publicly known password.
If you live in an apartment complex or a dorm, the probability of eavesdrop like this is quite high, as I see MiFis "available" on my wi-fi lists all the time. And some of THEM are wide open showing as unsecured, most likely with default password set as well, although I've never logged on to see. (Morals-n-ethics, ya' know).
And since it's YOUR MiFi and not the moocher's, play XBox for 10 hours, SURE!! Why not?
Oh, and while you're at it, hide your SSID (network name). This keeps it from showing up in peoples' wi-fi lists (broadcasting).
It always amazes me how many people have unsecured wi-fi connections then are shocked that their useage goes through the roof. And no leaving your SSID and passwrod as the defaults is NOT having a secure connection.
No. Changing it and hiding the network were the first things that I did. On top of that, not once was another device shown as being connected to the MiFi.
