Help me out of the storm!

It's been almost a year now and I've finally had it with my BB Storm...I'm not due for an "upgrade" until december of 2010 so is there anyway I can downgrade my phone?  I'm missing calls/emails/texts, going whitescreen, unable to download my updates (no memory) w/o deleting one of the 3 apps i've downloaded :smileysurprised: and on and on...the phone is really disrupting my work...which is not good as I'm on the road and need a reliable phone. HELP!

Hey,

Sorry to hear about your problems with your Storm.  Perhaps one of the Storm users can give a tip or two for you.  However, I can highly recommend the Tour.  I don't consider it a "downgrade" but perhaps a lateral move.  The Tour does have more memory than the Storm, 128 on Storm Vs 256mb on the Tour.  Now the Storm2 is supposed to have 256mb of memory also, so if you like the touch screen, that may be worth getting.  Look on Blackberry's website for info on the Storm2 9550, which will also feature WiFi.

it sounds like you have some major memory leaks. are you just downloading a bunch of apps that fill up your memory? have you tried wiping your device? i had an issue with white screen which was due to memory leak on my phone. i had downloaded an app from crackberry and my memory was just disapearing. it was eating up 20mb of memory. check your apps. i wiped my device and reinstalled my os. maybe you should try that. are you running 4.7.0.148? thats the official storm os as of right now. also when you open apps are you closing them out...one by one? going to the bb key and clicking close? or are you just hitting the back key? if you are hitting the back key then those apps are still running and they are eating up your memory. the key to the storm is to close every app your not using or you will have memory issues and get the white screen freeze. i'm pretty sure you downloaded a bad app from somewhere that is giving memory issues to your phone. 3 apps is not enough to freeze your phone. i have 18 apps on my phone with 22mb left. i also do a battery pull once a week. if you wipe your device and install bb os and your still having issues take your phone back to the verizon store before your 1 year warranty is up so they can mabye help you with a replacement or a solution.

How are you going recommended a the 9550 when it's not being sold right now? Knowing Verizon probably ever.

I feel your pain.  I was having serious issues with my Storm and feel I have seen it all.  I had white screens, random (and frequent) reboots, data connection freezes.  I even had an accelerometer break on me so the screen was frozen in an upside down portrait position.  Verizon "graciously" acknowledged that I was having hardware issues with the phone and has replaced my Storm 3 times in the past 8 months with no charge.  I was also about fed up but can say the last one I got has worked great (knock on wood).

How are you trying to do your updates?  Are you trying to do a wireless update from the phone?  Or are you using the Desktop Manager software to do the update?  I was told by a Verizon tech to only use the Desktop Manager to do the updates.  He said the phone doesn't have enough internal memory to support an OTA update if you have other apps installed (or a significant amount of contacts, emails, or other data).  The only way I have ever been able to do an OTA update was to wipe the handheld of all data and 3rd party apps.  I haven't had problems doing updates via Desktop Manager.

You also have to be wary of which 3rd party apps you install.  Unless they fixed it recently, Google Voice app has a serious memory leak that caused my battery to drain in 3 - 4 hours.  Once uninstalled I can go 36 hours before needing a recharge.  There are a few others I have installed at one time or another including Weatherbug that have caused issues, but not nearly as severe.  You can also try checking settings on any apps that sync data behind the scenes and adjust the frequency of the updates so they update less frequently.  I have done that with a few apps and it seemed to help.

You have 2 choices if you want to stay with verizon and change phones...

1) Go to store now... or wait till Nov 6 for the Droid: Tell them you want to replace your phone under there 1 year lost, damaged, stolen policy... just be sure you do not currently have insurance on the phone (cancel it first if you do). Then, you can buy a phone of your choice and just pay the 1 year price for the phone (which is more than the 2 year price, but only by 50-100 dollars. I don't think this extends your contract date (someone will correct me if I am wrong.) Be sure to do this before you hit the 1 year mark on the existing contract, otherwise this option is not available and you will have to do #2.

2) Wait till December when your contract hits the 1 year mark. You are then eligible for an upgrade and may buy the phone at the 2 year price. This option will extend your contract for 2 years from the date you get the new phone.

As you are not yet eligible for a discounted upgrade... might I suggest downloading the new MR3 Blackberry Storm OS?  It has to be completed via your PC or MAC, but if you try this it could help.  If it does not work then please contact me via Private Message and I will work with you to explore your options.  NOTE:  The New BB OS will take approximately 30 min - 120 minutes to fully update and your device will be inoperable during this entire time.  Also, some applications may be stripped away (I.e. Blackberry Messenger), but you can download them again via Icon from your device or from the Blackberry Application site.
