Data Package requirement

I went in to my local Verizon store to purchase an 8230 flip---only need it for a phone---do not want, nor do I need to use this phone as anything but a phone.  The Manager told me he could not sell me an 8230 without me purchasing a $30. data package.

Can this be possible, even legal???

Yup, all carriers require a DATA plan when you buy a smartphone, If all you want is a flip phone, there are way better phones then the 8230 ( Talking voice only here ) and if you need a PDA buy an Ipod. The reason they do this, and all of them do, is to recoup the extra cost of the smartphone over a conventional phone.

It's more then recouping the cost of the PDA, its to prevent surprise data costs to the owner of said PDA.  Many times in the past data would add up to hundreds of dollars in charges, if we just charge you for the package you most likely won't go over.

I can agree whole heartedly with that statement, Michele.  One day I thought it would be a good idea to figure out how much it would cost extra on my phone bill if I were paying /MB...  Not pretty at all.
