Once your contract is complete, the phone is yours and you are month-to-month, meaning you can leave Verizon whenever you want without paying an Early Termination Fee.

Does the plan cost less when I own the phone?

If you are out of contract, on a More Everything plan, and have a smartphone, the answer is yes.  But you have to log into your MyVerizon account and add the discount yourself ($10 off the line access fee if you have less than a 10 GB data plan, $25 off the line access fee if you have a 10 GB or more data plan).
