A friend gave me a phone to use that he had let another friend use and we don't know what the keypad code is. Can I reset it somehow? I figured first I need to activate my number on the device.

That was nice of your friend! Let's get your passcode reset. What kind of phone are you using? What password do you need to reset? If you are using a basic phone, when you activate your phone (*228 press call option 1) all passcodes on the phone reset. They usually reset to the last four digits of your phone number. Keep us posted.
