Pantech Jest - Problem
jake_j_nicholls

I was writing a text message on my Jest today after charging it all of last night. The phone dropped service somehow (I have never lost service at my house.) and died. When I tried to turn it back on, it'd show me the default verizon screen and black out again. Figuring it was dead, I plugged it and it would go from verizon screen to dead, verizon screen to dead, so it kept trying to turn itself on. I'm sorta wondering what happened and if it'd be bad for the phone to allow it to try and boot a million times.

Try removing the battery for awhile and then reinserting the battery and restarting the phone. If that doesn't help, then return it to the store and see if they can either fix it or replace it for you.

Yea, good luck with this.  I am currently on my 3rd Pantech Jest....that right, for the same exact problem.  And every single one they keep sending me keeps doing the same thing!  It is sooooo frustrating!  I am ready to switch services.  I have had 3 phones in the last week.  All of the phones they send are refurbished and everytime I shut them off they freeze at the Verizon screen and I can not get them back on.  Good luck withyour phone!

If the Jest battery is fully discharged, the firmware is unable to detect the presence of the battery and it will only run off the charger. The battery will NEVER charge once this happens. I tried new batteries, new phones and new chargers with no luck. The only way to make the phone charge correctly is to either catch the phone and recharge before it goes dead or remove the battery and use an external charger to give it a boost. It only charges if it has one bar or more.

The Verizon Tech's at three local shops are just shaking their heads in amazement after witnessing the problem and finding no fix. Verizon is asking me to accept another model of phone thru cpo replacement

My brand new new pantech is locking up on the Verizon screen or won't turn on unless you remove battery everytime.

Everybody !!! is having this problem.

Change to ANOTHER phone brand !!!

I just upgraded to a Pantech Jest and so far the phone has been mostly a disappointment.  Instead of being able to load music files directly on the phone, it uses a proprietary program to load music and it does not work; it isn't able to recognize the phone when it is connected to the computer.  Meanwhile, Windows Media Player does recognize the phone, but is does not allow me to select specific music files; it just downloaded everything from my computer and quickly filled up the memory card with a lot of tracks that I really didn't want.

But I can't even listen to the music I installed  on the phone because the phone apparently also uses a proprietary headset which no one seems to sell.  Ordinary headsets won't fit; the jack on the phone is too small. Is there a solution for this, or did they send me a phone that is designed for another country? So far, with all it's so-called "features", this phone has not been good for anything more than just to talk.

I just got my new Jest today and developed the same lock up on starting problem.  However, I may have discovered a work-around.  First I found that making a call to the cell phone actually cures the lockup and the phone works normally after that.  This made me think that maybe any type of input would fix the lockup so I added a keyboard lock code and set it to require the code upon startup.  Now when I start the phone, and it reaches the Verizon logo where it used to lock up, it asks for the keyboard unlock code and works fine after I enter it.  I'm hoping that this is a long term fix and that nothing else is wrong.  All of this leads me to believe that the problem resides in the software, not hardware and can be fixed with a simple software upgrade.  You might want to try this work-around and do report back on your success or not.  Good Luck!

Hopefully there will be a Software update soon that fixes this most annoying lockup issue. In the meantime, I believe to have found a fix. At least for my phone it works consistently and no more lockup, period.

When I first experienced the problem, I managed to get it to boot up after playing around with plugging in the charger and removing it after it tried to startup. When it finally booted up, I did a Phone Restore from the security menu. This restores the phone to factory and erases ALL data. So it needs to be reactivated by pressing *228 send etc. You know the drill.

After reactivating it,before ANY customization or changes to the freshly restored state, I shut it down and it restarted no problem. I tested this shutdown/startup cycle at least a dozen or so times, all no problem, it started up normally each time. I suspected some change to the phone would initiate the problem, so I started customizing in all possible ways. After Each change I cycled it Off/On. No problems on any customizing, all normal startup. I inserted my micro sd card, tested all save functions. Pics/Music/Videos, all no problem, Power down and back Up consistently 2 dozen plus tries, all good.

Time to retrieve all my contacts. I install Backup Assistant, restore my contacts. Shutdown/ Startup.... FAIL !!! . That was the culprit !

After fighting to get it to startup again, I did another Phone restore, reactivated it and I was good on all Shutdown / Startup cycles once again. I went ahead and installed Backup Assistant, restored my contacts and then here was the key:  Uninstall Backup Assistant after restoring Contacts. I have tested this countless times to make sure and it starts up normal everytime now.

I hope this helps you Jest users out there until we get a fix from Verizon.

Please post your results.

Cheers

dont need a program, i somehow seemed to have a jest day of launch, and all you do is set your USB detected mode to ask on plug, then plug it in to PC, click media sync, then go to my computer and click on a portable media device ( or similar). Also you have about 1GB built in for music without any cards.
