Wasn't it also you, Mojave, that mentioned at one point that a rep told you the problem was a combination of firmware and manufacturing?  (I seem to remember something like that).

If so, it certainly makes sense--and would explain why even after updating the phones--some would still have the shutdown problem.

After having the phone for 10 or 11 days now, I can certainly see how normal use would eventually wear down the battery durability.  Pretty much everything you do on this phone--be it while closed or flipped open--has you gripping the phone over its battery...to type in numbers, use the qwerty, take pictures, etc.

Even if you are very gentle with it, you still put some pressure on that back battery while typing on the qwerty...you pretty much have no choice.  So if you are even a tad rough with the phone, and the phone was manufactured poorly, It makes a lot of sense that there'd be battery connection/flexing problems.

Like I've been saying, LG should really offer some kind of extended warranty or replacement/upgrade for this phone.

I personally haven't had a problem...yet.  But if it's anywhere near as widespread as it seems, they'll be forced to do *something.*

I wish there'd be a formal poll/study done to figure out the exact failure rate.  That's really the only way any true headway will be made.

no i have three people i work with, and one friend who have the same phone. I know they've gone to get replacements, and put things in the batteries but that didn't work for me. I gave up on my phone, and refused to go back down to my local verizon store, seeing as how they messed my bill up badly for about six months, and were complete [edit] when i would go in there. I just got my friends old phone and am using that now.I've only had my phone for about seven months now.

For the past 2 days, my phone has started shutting off on its own.  I've had this phone since Dec 12, 2009 and now starting to experience what everyone here is stating.

Great, garbage phones but we get to pay more for them now with the recent data plan screw job.

Have you been able to determine what the cause of your failure is?  (Firmware, SD card, loose/defective battery?)

Have you tried the possible fixes?  (Firware upgrade, cleaning battery connectors, the folded piece of paper behind the battery, etc etc?)

Just curious, thanks.

I updated to the latest firmware version 6 last week.  Started shutting down yesterday.  Have cleaned the connections but have not tried the paper idea yet.  New phone, shouldn't be happening.

This is a problem that happens to all LG phones on VZW.  While I barely saw this issue on previous LG phones, I noticed that the new type of phones since the LG VX8300 have this problem a lot.... and I mean on all phones that came out after that one that have this problem.

So it actually started shutting down *after* you updated the firmware...that's interesting...

Hope you get it working.  Let us know how it works out.

If it still shutting down after the software update, it's most likely the connectors. What did you clean them with?

So, I've had my Env3 for 19 days now, and it still is working normally.  I wanted to try and slowly test the different ways the phone might start to shutdown, so for the first few days, I left it as i purchased it (with the old firmware).  When the phone worked properly for a few days, I updated to version 6 firmware.  The phone continued to work normally.

Next, i purchased an SD card and installed it with some pictures and songs.  It's been a couple days with no problems there either.

All that's left would be a battery problem, which seems to make sense since I haven't had the phone long enough to really put a lot of pressure on the back panel and possibly cause it to loosen, or for the connectors to separate.  I *did* order a plastic case to protect the back though, so hopefully that will work.

I sent an e-mail to LG asking if they are aware of how widespread this problem is, and if they were planning on addressing the problem with either recalls, or extended warranties.  Hopefully they will reply, and I'll post the answer here.

I'll also update how my own phone is doing.
