Had the same problem here as well.  The only solution I could come up with was resetting the phone to the factory default as described in the owners manual then backup assistant was able to work properly.  So if you don't need all the old data...which we didn't, this worked fine for us.

Having just got off the phone with Verizon Tech Support about an unrelated issue, I was beyond PO'd when I attempted to backup my phone contact to this phone. I thought I was having a cruel joke played on me. I've looked into these forums, and found that, just like the other issues I'm having, I wasn't alone.

This time, however, I'm happy to say that I figured out the issue, and what to do....I pray this works for the rest of you, as well.

And yes, I was having the problem with the Invalid PIN, and all the PIN changing and syncing from the website did absolutely nothing...here is what I did (note, I'm using the Samsung Intensity phone):

MENU >> BROWSE & DOWNLOAD >> (Scroll to BACKUP ASSISTANT) select OPTIONS >>

UPGRADE CHECK >> (from here it will check & download the newest version of BA)
