upgrade vs adding a new phone

I have a iphone that's eligible for upgrade on the 23rd of this  month, whats the advantage of upgrading a phone vs just getting a new phone adding it and then deactivating the phone it's replacing?

You don't say what plan you are on

If you are on the Verizon plan and have 8GB or more per month on your plan, If you upgrade and use the DPP payment plan, you get free 2 GB per month as long as the line stays active on Verizon Plan 8 GB and above.

If you can still do a contract upgrade, usually that is the worst deal, even though the phone seems cheaper. In the long wrong, you pay more.

If the bonus data does not pertain to you, then there is little advantage to do a DPP upgrade vs getting a new phone and activating it.
