Yes, network extenders are only 3g. However, with the iPhone 5 and 5S when there is a network extender giving a strong signal the phone would utilize the 3g on the extender instead of a weak 4g signal. That's what needs to be fixed.

Once again that is an issue APPLE should be fixing. Not sure how you think Verizon can do anything about that.

To be fair, Verizon can coordinate with manufacturers to hammer out issues with devices and request enhancements

I attempted this and VZW refused to work on it. I did open up an Applecare case and bugreport with Apple, although both went nowhere to date. To be fair to Apple, the Samsung GS5 has the same exact problem, so this does seem like a VZW failure to require device manufacturers who supported LTE Voice to support this configuration properly. I wish someone at VZW cared enough to take ownership of this to get it fixed, but when I got to Tier 2, they refused to take ownership and escalate it to the Network Repair Bureau.

It is an issue between Verizon and it's device suppliers. I pay apple for a phone. I pay Verizon every month for the ability to ask people "Can you hear me now" and have good signal. Verizon sells the network extender and Verizon, I'm sure gives apples specs on how to make the phone work on the Verizon network and Verizon Network Extenders. It doesn't really matter to me who's problem it is. Verizon is the one selling the extenders and Verizon is the one I'm paying for a good signal. Verizon should be coordinating any fixes with Apple, I shouldn't have too.

Completely agree. The fix needs to come from Apple & Google, but the coordination of getting this fixed is VZW's responsibility. Unfortunately they will not take ownership of it, so we're on our own unless you have better luck with your case than I did with mine.

Apple does it's own thing. That's the rules they set if you won't sell their devices. Apple rolls out the device updates not Verizon. Verizon rolls out Windows and Androids updates. Why not Apple's? Because Apple has the clout to dictate the rules. So the ball is in Apple's court.

SSchuermann,
Sorry to hear that your iPhone will not connect to the network extender. Looks like it's not as simple as a setting. Let's get to the bottom of it! What lights are illuminated on the extender? What color are they? When you dial #48 on the iPhone what do you hear? Do you have a case on your iPhone? If so, does the problem persist with it removed?

Since installing iOS 8.1 my iPhone 6plus seems to be using the network extender more without my having to turn off VoLTE.
