I have no way to check or send email on my brand new device. Both hotmail and iCloud emails are 'Connection to server failed'. I've called Verizon and waiting to hear back from Apple. Very aggravating.

Bluebarry, the "connection to server failed" symptom you are getting can absolutely be caused by a preference in iOS.
Go into Settings > Cellular - and scroll down to you see - Use Cellular Data For: and make sure Mail and Safari is turned in the ON position.
