why did verizon make me turn in my phone?

So a few months ago, I was eligible for early edge. I was on a basic 2 yr agreement before that. I used my early edge and got a S5. I had an old droid RAZR m before. They told me I had to turn it in. So I did. I know a family who all had switched to the edge program and they went and got 4 smartphones. None of them had to turn in their phones. They also were on a basic 2 yr agreement before. So can anyone tell me what I'm missing? Why I had to turn in my old phone (which would have been my back up phone should this one die)?

The old phone was your Get Out of Contract early Card. You were in contract and Edge usually requires you be out of contract.

Yea, it's a bit of an exchange.  Your old phone, for the ability to replace your device earlier than the 2 year contract.  If your family members weren't in contract, they wouldn't have to trade anything in.

There's details that could be missing.  For example if any of them had basic phones, they do not have to turn those in for Early Edge.  If they were upgrade eligible then they would have been placed on regular Edge which would not require turning in their old devices as it would have considered them to have completed the original two year contracts.  Basically if you Early Edge and there is a smartphone on the line at the time the promotion was added to the account, you have to turn that smartphone in.

The only way you get to keep your phone when you upgrade early on edge is if you pay the phone off in full before you upgrade.
