In mid May, an update occurred with my Galaxy S4. Since the battery drains, entire phone is unstable. I went back to Verizon where I got it and was told there was nothing they could do. I don't know how to resolve this. Advice?

Before I updated my S4 I did a factory data reset and have not had any problems with the update. The only thing I can advise you to do now is a factory reset and that may resolve some of the problems you are having. If you do the factory reset do not reinstall your apps or app data from backup. Instead reinstall all new apps from the store.
