Do you use screen protectors?

Your phone includes a proximity sensor. When you hold the phone to your ear, the display goes dark to prevent accidental touches. When you move your phone away from your ear, the display lights up again. Note: Screen protectors can interfere with touch screen performance. After market screen protectors must have an opening for the proximity sensor to operate properly. If not, abnormal function might occur like the issues outlined on your post.

If you are not using screen protectors a soft reset may resolve the issues outlined on your post. To perform a soft reset on your phone please follow the instructions below:

Remove battery with phone ON. Replace battery after 10 seconds. Power phone ON. Allow phone to complete the applications registration.

On my Eris I can press Vol down (or is it up, I just keep pressing til it works) + Send button. Not sure if it is a common feature to all android phones or not, but it's worth a shot.

I have the same issue and have had it for some time (before the last update). I don't use a screen protector and I've done several soft resets. As the user said, the screen goes black when put on speakerphone. Period. It has nothing to do with the proximity sensor. The only way to get it back while on the call is to press the power button. I then have access to phone functions only; I can no longer access any other functions until I hang up and re-unlock my phone. This is definitely a bug (and a pain in the you know what).

This sounds very much like the issue discussed here: https://community.verizonwireless.com/thread/768061. See esp. my post at the end: https://community.verizonwireless.com/message/790069#790069. My informal tests showed that a Samsung Stratosphere will go black 30 seconds into a call under any circumstances. Neither proximity nor horizontal/vertical orientation has anything to do with it. (I have a screen protector, but the proximity sensor is uncovered.) I have to press the power button (screen comes on, goes black again) and then press it again to regain control of the screen.

WRT jaycough's issue: "if I press power phone disconnects," there is a setting that may be causing this. Go to Home screen, then Menu > Settings > Accessibility, and see if "The power key ends calls" is checked. (This again is on a Samsung Stratosphere; your phone may be somewhat different.) If so, unchecking it might stop this behavior. (I've tried it both ways, and sometimes it's handy to have the power key do that, but I've also accidentally cut off a call trying to turn my screen back on!)

I'm here to help.

What device do you have? Try placing the device in Safe Mode. If the issue stops then the problem is a third party app that's been downloaded. If this is the case you will need to remove all third apps and then add them back one at a time in order to find the one causing the issue.

If you continue to have issue after placing in Safe Mode then we will need to further troubleshoot.

For steps on how to place your device in Safe Mode, go to www.vzw.com and in the Search box type Safe Mode and the model of your device. It will provide you with the steps.

I hope this information is helpful. If you need further assistance feel free to reply.

Samsung Droid Charge. Yes, it could be a third party app. It may take quite while to track down. FYI, I don"t install any apps that run services.
