For the past 4 years my phone randomly drops calls at my home.  I've had both an an iPhone and the galaxy s4 and they both drop the calls. My wife has the same phone and service as I do and it has never dropped a call. anyone know why this might be happening?

Hi firemedic931!

Wow, what you described certainly is odd! Let's figure out what's going on! What zip code are you in? Which device do you have now, the iPhone or the S4? Do you normally leave the device on most of the time? If so, this can cause the device to lose registration with the network. Please supply me with some additional details, thanks!

I have the s4. Zip is 37329. I always leave the phone on.

Perfect details firemedic931! The s4 is a great phone. Do you notice dropped calls only inside your home, (or outside too), or with particular contacts? It's always a good idea to power cycle your phone once a day so it can re-register. It could also be how/where you're holding the phone. For example, if you're holding it with your hand covering the whole back, it may be covering the antenna, losing a connection. You can try holding on sides of the phone only and see if you notice a difference.

Please try both of these suggestions and keep us posted.

Thank you,

This happens both inside and outside the home. I've tried power cycling the phone everyday and tried holding it on different areas of the phone. It's still dropping every call I make multiple times regardless of whom I'm calling.

You could install something like LTE Discovery - Android Apps on Google Play and see how strong of a signal you are getting and which tower it seems to think you are using and do the same with your wife's phone.  The numbers may not mean a lot to you but if you have the same app on both phones you can at least compare the numbers and see if there is a significant difference which could indicate some type of problem with your phone.  It may also indicate if your phone is using a different tower than hers if you are located equally distant from two different towers for instance.  I would also go into Settings and hit System Updates just to make sure everything is up to date.  Also worth looking at Settings->About phone and compare all the versions listed with your wife's phone and see if there is any differences.

It appears my phone is switching to different towers every 5 to 10 seconds through the lte discovery app. My wifes phone is using just 1 tower

We want to see you getting the same great service that your wife is seeing on her phone, firemedic931. Do you have a case on your phone by chance? Following the other steps dilbertaz recommended, were you able to see any other differences in your phone's menu?  JenniferH_VZW Follow us on Twitter @VZWSupport If my response answered your question please click the "Correct Answer" button under my response. All versions are the same on both phones.  Software is up to date. I have a Otterbox defender on my phone but even if I don't have the case on it still drops all my calls.

The fact that it is changing towers that often is a bit disconcerting although if it is only LTE it shouldn't affect your calling, but it could indicate an issue with the phone perhaps. If it happens on the 1xRTT towers while on the phone, every one of those switches requires a hand-off between the two towers which is normally not a problem but if it is that frequent it could be.  What are the signal strengths of the two towers it switches between, does your wife's ever switch to the other tower? You don't have a nearby neighbor that has a network extender do you?

If you run LTE Discovery on both what kind of numbers do you see for SNR and the numbers reported in decibels (dBm)?  Really the 1xRTT is the tower(s) you are interested in for voice calls.  Only if your phone was capable of Advanced Calling (VoLTE) would you worry about LTE towers at this point.
