droid eris - force close msg

When I power on my droid eris, i recently started getting the following msg:   

 "Sorry!  the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped unexpectedly.  Pls try again."    and then the "force close" button is at the bottom of this msg.   This msg flashes 2x.  

 

I can no longer download ANY apps - it stops at "starting download".   Everything else on my phone works!

 

Please help!   I just hope I don't have to get a new phone!! aarrrggh!
