android.process.acore stopped unexpectedly

I am hoping that I am not the only person that is having this repeated problem.

On Nov 6 I bought an Eris for my husband's birthday.  Worked beautifully and we both fell in love with it.  About a week later, his started with the message "The process android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." with the Force close button. This happened when accessing the phone application.  Took it back and Verizon did a hard reset.  Worked fine for another week or so.  Then crashed again.  Still within the 30 days, so got a new phone.  This past weekend his phone crashed again- leading me to believe it was a software issue, i.e. something he downloaded, but we have the same apps and mine was working fine.

Went to Verizon again and now have his 3rd Eris.  Came back to my desk to find my phone had no service and the dreaded message appears when attempting to access the phone.  His phone is right next to mine so I know that there is service in the area.

HELP!  Love the phone but after not even a month, the troubles seem to be out weighing the benefits.  Suggestions?

This happened to me after 5 days of use. Had to do a factory reset and then started putting apps back on when it happened again. In my case it seems to be Open Home that causes it. Every time I install that app it crashes big time. Of course it could be coincidence but I did it 5 separate times and each time Open Home gets installed the phone refuses to restart.

I am no developer, so I won't be able to give you a real technical answer. But what I do know, I will share:

Some programs, particularly the ones that are in Home Replacement work in junction with the .acore home process in the Android OS.  If an error occurs with the program then it'll effect the process that runs the homescreen.

Now, why when you use the phone, it force closes? I don't know. The HTC Sense is a UI is basically a film over the Android stock UI and it has it's own batch of processes that run on it's own.

I am not a developer either.   I have had the same problem with 2 different Eris phones on Verizon.  The solution really has nothing to do with rogue programs, but with the bootloader on Android.  If you have less than 60-70mb available in ROM memory at startup, the bootloader will fail to properly load the acore, gaaps, phone and other essential system apps.  As a result, you will get multiple force close messages, no service, and a total inability to access the phone or Internet. To check available memory , go to Settings from the Home Screen and check SD card settings.  It will give the available ROM.  If it is less than 60-70mb, then you may have problems re-starting the phone once it is completely turned off.  It does not seem to have anything to do with the number of programs stored, just the total available memory.  I have been able to replicate the results below by deleting a variety of different programs, so I tend to think it does not matter what programs you have installed.

I have found 2 solutions.  The most drastic is to do a factory reset (settings:Security), which we wipe out all existing Programs and reset all values to default.  Because there are no outside programs taking up ROM space, the system boots normally.  Just make sure to back up all your programs prior to doing a factory reset.

The 2nd solution is to start uninstalling programs until 60-70mb is freed up on the Rom chip.  If the phone does not automatically detect service at around 60mb, try turning off the phone, then turning it back on.  Once service is found, you can restore your programs that you backed up and had uninstalled.  Nice part about the 2nd option is that any custom scene info is saved, and far fewer programs need to be re-installed.

Just a note:  Until Verizon and HTC fix this issue, do NOT turn your phone off, or you will need to repeat this process.

I just wanted to say thank you for posting your solution!

I uninstalled programs until I had 65 or so megs...and voila! The phone is working again.

DON'T TURN OFF YOUR PHONE!!

I hope Verizon and HTC fix this extremely annoying issue. And why didn't tech support suggest I uninstall programs, rather than a hard reboot? I really works.

This solution definately works.  I bricked my phone by installing too many applications.  Everything worked until the different programs began to build up a cache.  My phone locked up as a result, the phone service wouldn't work, the Internet wouldn't work and I kept getting error messages.  Once I deleted enough applications to clear 58 megs of available space I shut down and restarted my phone and it was fine.  :manvery-happy:
