That's a great question. Knowing the ins and outs of how the phone will connect is definitely important. Your phone should automatically connect to a WiFi source it's been connected to in the past when it comes in range. Once connected, the device will use that connection instead of cellular data as long as the connection is a strong one. Since the phone will attempt to use whichever source is providing the best signal, to prevent unexpected data use, we do recommend turning the cellular data off. To prevent your phone from automatically making this decision for you, use the steps here http://vz.to/1Tn3nuU to disable "Avoid bad Wi-Fi connections".
