Do I need it on and what is it really for, I have all I need with it off?

It isn't required. Wifi is usually faster than 3G, so I turn mine on when I have known networks around, or when my 3G coverage is spotty.
With VZW moving to tiered data plans, it may make sense for new customers to use Wifi more.

I rarely ever use wifi on my phone. Wifi is just a way to connect to the internet. If you have wifi say in your home, you can turn it on your phone. Then connect to that & use internet that way.  You can read all about what Wifi is HERE.
