I've copied .wma files from my computer to my phone using the suggested methods. They don't play. What do I have to do to move files that will play with google music. Do I have to subscribe to google music to play stuff I've already bought?

Google Play Music supported file types - Google Play Help
WMA (.wma) | Can be uploaded using the Windows version of Music Manager, not Google Play Music for Chrome |
I have found that if GPM doesnt allow upload it might not play locally either.

The best solution is to convert them to MP3 it will work much better. There are plenty of free programs available to convert the files.
