I have the Droid Eris, and I'm loving it, but I'm sure that this applies to everybody.
I was wondering when I should keep the 3G on and when i should leave it off. I've noticed you cannot download picture messages, but you can make calls and get normal SMS messages. Obviously, leaving it on all the time would drain the battery, so I'm wondering how often most people keep that on, and how fast their battery goes.
Do most people leave it on all of the time? Or do they leave it off unless they need it like I do?

If you're an internet pro gimp like myself, then you always have it on. If I would turn it off at anytimes, it would probably be when It's just idle. Like say, at work, where I can't use it.
If you want to preserve battery life, there are a multitude of other ways of doing so. For one, lowering screen brightness, turning off wi-fi, even staying off 3G helps.
At the end of the day, you know your lifestyle. Try to use good judgement when deciding when to turn off 3G. If you're at a meeting, turn it off. If you're at work, turn it off. Out and about and using your laptop with WiFi? You really don't need 3G then, either.

Off of memory (because I can't check my phone at work) but it should be at Home>Settings>Wireless Settings.

Wireless Controls>Mobile Network Settings.
It should say "Use Only 2G network". If not then it's a verizon thing.
