For my phone I use Google for Contacts, and Google Drive for some of my data (mostly pictures).  I back up all of my Data and Apps though to my Computer.

On my computer, I back up to an external Hard Drive and a NAS drive so I have 2 redundant copies of it at all times.  One is kept offsite and the other is home with the computer.

Verizon Cloud is about the worst solution you can use to back things up especially with Google being free. There is also Dropbox and SkyDrive (Microsoft).  Any of these are better then Verizon's cloud

I fully agree with Verizon Cloud is about the worst solution you can use.
I have found it to be a very unstable backup program.  I like your NAS drive idea.

Unfortunately, multiple backups are what you need.  May stop using Verizon Cloud (or any Cloud storage other than iCloud) and stick with backing up photos to my PC (including iTunes) and an external drive.

Verizon cloud actually is a pretty decent way to back up. Not the most reliable, but you do get 5gb of free storage if you have a More Everything plan, which is quite a bit more than dropbox. Plus its really easy to set up, you just click on which stuff you want to automatically back up every day. No need to use this for contacts, that for photos, the other for music, etc. Its not a bad way to go for simplicity purposes, and is generally going to work just fine.

It might not be a bad idea though to also save important files to your sd card, or some other backup mechanism, such as google. If you have a Samsung device, I also recommend a program for your PC called Samsung Kies. It provides an attractive and easy to use interface for backing up your device, and restoring as well. It also allows you to do firmware updates.

I use Google for contacts and calendar.  I make a whole back up file on the computer using samsung kleis.  I really don't like the cloud.  I miss having an LG phone where I could make a whole back up file of settings and all right on the phone.  Mary

I use both Verizon Cloud and icloud.  icloud is still in beta and constantly breaks.  I would actually prefer to use the Verizon Cloud but it has glitch that will keep me from ever using it.  When managing photos everyone ends up with duplicates, not good when you are storing them in the cloud with storage limits, unfortunately if you delete one of the copies of the duplicate photos all copies are deleted, including the original.  The makes Verizon Cloud a non- starter.

Actually you get 25gb free with the More Everything Plan you just have to sign in to upgrade to it.

I just moved to Verizon but so far I am using it for Documents, Messages and Call History, my photos and videos already backup to multiple other services. Music I get via computer so I don't need it backed up and contacts sync to Google already.  Not really concerned about Messages or Call History but I figure it doesn't hurt if something serious happens to the phone at least I have some history.

It is taking a long, long time, hours, to delete pictures from cloud.  I have backed them up on disc to free up cloud space but it is very time consuming.

Also when I delete from cloud and the picture, for example, is still on my phone, it will back it up again so I lose the space I free up.
