I have a new LG Lucid 3 smartphone and am curious about the two text messaging icons on the phone. One is Verizon's "Message+" and the other is a more simpler one just called "Messages". Which one is better?

I can't address the app on your LG, unless it is a common Android feature. I have the Galaxy SIII, and the Message+ app is far superior. It started off slowly, but they've been adding features to it at a rapid clip. Among other things, you can access and send messages from both a web interface and a PC app.
It also keeps 90 days worth of history.
