Syncing contacts with google

For the 15 years or so I have had Verizon my contacts have been backed up with Verizon Back Up Assitant. I want to change that primary way to google with my gmail. I don't see a way to do that. I have my gmail checked off to sync with my gmail but when I go into my contact names they show they are being backed up by back up assistant. I removed that account and it deleted all of my contacts so I ended up having to restore it again. Any ideas on how to switch it over without having to renter all my contacts?

You need to first export the contacts from Backup Assistant.

Then you need to import the resulting csv file into your gmail account.
