Sending mp3/ringtones on Droid ERIS

Simply how does one do it? I've tried several times but all I can see is to follow this procedure: Attach>Audio>(name of file) which comes up with a format for sending the music embedded inside a slideshow. From what I can tell, none of my pal's dumb phones can read such slideshows. Can't I just send ringtones like they do???

Download the app called Handcent SMS first. From that you can send ringtones through MMS.
