Random restarting and deleted msg

My phone will randomly restarts on it own and will deletes all my text messages at the same time. What is wrong and how do I prevent this from happening again?

Although you could possibly have a defective phone, it is more likely that some software you installed on the phone is causing issues.

I would suggest first going into the market, look at the apps you have installed, and see if any of them are marked as "update available" and if so, update those apps.

The second thing to look at is if you have any of the "antivirus" applications installed.  If so, uninstall it and see if the problem goes away.  the AV apps have caused similar problems in the past.  (And most likely the AV apps are useless, (and certainly unproven), at least at this point.)

The next step would be trying to uninstall any software that you installed recently before the restarts began.

If that fails, backup your data (picutres, songs, etc.) (don't worry about Google email, contacts, calendar, to-do etc. those are stored on Google's servers.) and to a "factory reset" of the phone (From the settings/privacy menu.

You don't mention which phone you have, is it the Moto Droid, or the Eris?
