POP3 email

I have a POP3 server setup on my eris.

My question is.

Can I set the phone up so it asks me if I want to retrieve the mail.

I also would like to have the POP server show that the mail downloaded to the phone is unread.

Thanks

I don't believe that there is a way to have the phone ask you if you want to retrieve email, but you can set the "Email Check Frequency" to "None" and manually refresh it at your convenience.

If the message has been marked read on the server, it will not come to the phone as unread.  If you want it to show up as unread on the phone, you will need to leave it as unread on the server or mark it back as unread after you've read it on your PC.

The POP3 protocol doesn't officially support the ability to notify the server if the message has been read or not.

The IMAP protocol, on the other hand, does support this.  (It's newer and more powerful than pop3, but does have it's own quirks...)

Most servers that support POP3 will also support IMAP.  I suggest trying to re-setup your account with IMAP, rather than POP3 to see if it is supported by your email provider.  (If you are checking something like gmail, yahoo, hotmail etc, you might have to log into your account and specifically enable IMAP support - I know you do on your GMail account.)

The other poster's idea about setting the frequency to check for email to none is correct for your other issue.

I also suggest, that if you can not get the default email client to work the way you want it to, you might wish to try the K9 email client from the market.

Thanks for the help.

The application has a manual setting for downloading the mail from the server.

As for the IMAP Yahoo Mail only supports it for certain apps.

But you all have helped me anyway.

It has been so long since I have used anything other than a direct connect to Yahoo Mail that I have forgotten all the POP3 caveats.

Thanks Again!
