Is normal expectations a thing of the past? Should we expect less so when we get more we are excited? I think that people in general and service providers don't really care whether or not the give you accurate and friendly information and service anymore. Are my thoughts in the minority?

No, normal expectations are not a thing of the past. Sometimes, though, what some people think are "normal" expectations are actually "unreasonable" expectations, and those are, well, unreasonable.

the fewer options you have, the less service and care you will get. my firm has to exceed our clients' expectations because they have hundreds of options just in the area i live in. when you have only 2-3 viable options (if that), i believe that you won't have your expectations met, because of the lack of competition.
