Yes this could be a major roadblock but I can't see all of those big companies not getting their act together with Google. I'm sure there are blocks of IMEI code numbers already in the pipeline. But it is something to think about for some early Nexus 6 buyers.

It's the same problem with the Nexus 5 even on Sprint. Due to how CDMA works you need the IMEI in the database. You can't activate the Sim without a device on the database. Just give your previous device IMEI and activate the Sim and after that you are good to go.

What you do (will not work for the Nexus 5)
1. Use a sim adapter and put the nano sim in your old device.
2. Give the carrier you IMEI for that device and the sim card numbers.
3. Turn it on and let it activate.
4. Turn off old device and swap the sims into the Nexus 6.
5. Turn on Nexus 6 and all should work.
That's what I have to do with new devices(beta tested a few devices for various manufacturers on Verizon/T-Mobile/AT&T). I got smart about it and made sure I have a nano sim and just use adapters was always a pain.

sim adapters are like $3 shipped. I usually buy at least 5-10 a month for people at the office.
